This is a common concern, but the short answer is no. Treats are a powerful initial reinforcer when teaching new skills, but they aren’t the only reward we will be using. I will teach you how to fade the food reward after just a few repetitions so your dog learns to respond to a hand signal without having to see the treat first.
While I still utilize treats of varying value depending entirely on the specific situation, environment, and level of distractions, I will also show you how to incorporate other powerful real-life rewards your dog loves—like praise, petting, toys, going for a sniff, or opening the door to play—just to name a few.

You do not need to rush out and buy anything yet. With the exception of the Settled and Secure program for recently adopted adult dogs, every multi-session training program includes a convenient hands-free Treat Pouch Bundle to set you up for success from day one.
We will remain indoors for the first one or two lessons where there are fewer distractions. No need to worry if you live in a small house or apartment—we do not need a lot of space, and a small room is the perfect place to begin our training.
Once we are ready to move outside, you will want to have available:
A standard flat buckle collar and harness.
A 6-foot leash and 15-foot longline.
If you are unsure what type or brand of gear to choose, we can discuss exactly what you will need during your first lesson.

Every multi-session training program includes Q&A support via email or text between visits and for the lifetime of your dog covering all the skills learned during your training program.

I meet every family exactly where they are with zero judgment, so our first step together will be setting those tools aside to move past that reliance. I will show you how to engage with your dog so they voluntarily focus on you, giving you both a solid foundation for a more positive, natural, and reliable way to communicate.
